My Mother Always Said
(Acrostic Apothegm I)

Just remember what your momma told you.
Keep on keeping on.
Putting aside your worries, take life, like your momma said,
One day at a time. Follow the path before you, left
Foot on solid ground, a staff steadying you, right foot
        feeling for a safe spot
In the rocky stream bed, dry in
Front of you. You are carrying the one you love across your back,
slung from your shoulders; the weight tilts you forward.
The path is cluttered with roots
Of trees, overhanging vines, and branches that whip
past your outstretched hand and sting your face.
The tears will dry as you press forward. There is no
Other, easier way. Persevere, one step at a time,
until you reach the resting place, down by the riverside,
where you can lay your burdens down.
